Philadelphia, PA – Temple Owls head coach Pat Carroll has named Frank Blust and Kevin Rider his assistant coaches for the 2019-20 season.
Blust is a Level 4 USA Hockey Certified Coach. He has been head coach at La Salle College High School and the Midget U18 program at Wissahickon Skating Club, where he was for the past two seasons. He spent three years coaching all ages at Snider Hockey in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia while studying at Temple University.
He graduated from Temple with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2016. Blust currently resides in Maple Glen, PA.
Rider is the former assistant coach of the Hatfield Ice Dogs’ 18UAA program. He helped lead the Ice Dogs to the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL) and Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) Showcase playoffs in his first season with the team.
He played collegiately for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers in the ACHA second division from 2006-2011. He recorded 57 points in 112 games over five seasons as a defenseman. He helped the Retrievers win three Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) titles, appear in two National Championship tournaments, and finish fourth in the country in 2010. He was selected in the 2009 ACHA All-Star Challenge to represent the MACHA.
Rider graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business technology in 2011. Rider and his wife Victoria live in North Wales, PA.
“I am excited to have both Kevin and Frank become part of the coaching staff for the upcoming season and think the players will feel the same way once they have a chance to meet and interact with them,” Carroll said.
Both Blust and Rider have experience defensively, which Carroll says will help not only defensive zone coverage but also increase the efficiency of the team’s transition game.
Blust and Rider round out the three-man coaching staff behind the bench this upcoming season.
