The Temple University Ice Hockey Club is proud to announce defenseman John Guay as the newest commitment on the Temple Owls. Guay joins the Owls after skipping his would-be true freshman year playing junior hockey.

Guay played for the New Jersey Rockets 18U club in the United States Premier Hockey League’s U18 division in the 2019-20 season. In 21 games with the club, he scored five goals and four assists and recorded 24 penalty minutes. He added one assist in three playoff games.

Guay grew up playing for both Downingtown West High School and the Jr. Flyers, scoring between 0.24 to 0.69 points per game across each season. He played for the Vermont Academy Prep School during his senior year in 2018-19, scoring 3 goals and 4 assists in 29 games.

Guay describes himself as an offensive defenseman that consistently joins the rush. Although he has never experienced life as a college hockey player, his experience at the Vermont Academy and Jr. Flyers will help translate the speed of the ACHA game.

Head coach Pat Carroll ais excited to see what he will do once he dons the Cherry and Ice sweater.

“John will provide stability on the Blue Line for us and is also able to take some shifts on offense,” he said. “His ability to read the play will help his development and get him up to speed very quickly.”

“I try to model myself as an Erik Karlsson-like player,” Guay said. “I’m looking for the ACHA to be a pretty high level of hockey, from what I’ve heard. I just hope that I can fit pretty well on the team and help out in any way.”

Guay has declared biology as his major, joining incoming senior Sean McDowell as the only two biology majors on the team.
